Cheltenham Festival 2024 Tips – Day 3 Selections

Written By Rich Mawer

Rich has been in horse racing since a small boy growing up in Yorkshire and heading to the Malton open days. At University Rich shared a house with a bookmakers son for 3 years, in that time he learned how to read form, course stats, use speed ratings and price up a card. In 1996 Rich went full-time with his betting, then with the advent of Betfair in 2002 Rich switched to the exchanges, learning to trade and lay horses.

Well it is getting a little boring watching short priced favourites go in race after race, but it was also good to see Dan Skelton with two winners and there is one of his I fancy today too.

1:30 Turners Novices’ Chase – 2m 4f

Strong hand by the UK trainers here and I have been tracking GINNIE’s DESTINY to this race and he just get’s the vote ahead of Grey Dawning, after their clash here over course and distance in January, I think he can rubber stamp the form. Facile Vega is of obvious interest from Willie Mullins, but he has been well beaten on his last two outings and is vulnerable here.

SELECTION: GINNIE’S DESTINY – 2pts to win at 9/2

2:10 Pertemps Final Handicap Hurdle – 3m

Another horse I have been tracking into this has been LE MILOS from Dan Skelton, he has been dropping in the weights and as with Langer Dan yesterday, it was clear they were preparing him for a tilt at this race. It is super competitive, but he has the right profile and is certainly worth an each way interest, especially when you think he was running in last year’s Grand National off a mark of 152, so 142 over hurdles he could well be thrown in now.

SELECTION: LE MILOS – 1pt each way at 6/1

2:50 Ryanair Chase – 2m 4f

I am keeping faith with Paul Nicholl’s and STAGE STAR who won the Turner’s Novices Chase over course and distance last year for me at 8/1. He needs to bounce back from a disappointing run last time out, but he is still a class act and can take this today.

SELECTION: STAGE STAR – 2pts to win at 5/1

3:30 Stayers Hurdle – 3m

A race I always enjoy and this year looks a wide open renewal. I can certainly see why the money has come for Gordon Elliott’s Teahupoo after his win in the Hatton’s Grace at Fairyhouse in December, but he was only 3rd in this last year after going of as a short priced favourite, Sire Du Berlais won this at 33/1 last year and he does seem to come alive at Cheltenham but I just can’t see him repeating the performance. I am going to side with FLOORING PORTER who looked to have the world at his feet in 2021 and 2022 when he won this twice. He then went off the boil last year and has been seen recently over fences. However it is interesting to see Gavin Cromwell put him back over hurdles for this and I can see him going close again.

SELECTION: FLOORING PORTER – 1pt each way at 12/1
