Cheltenham Festival 2024 – Gold Cup Day – Day 4 Selections

Cheltenham Gold Cup

Written By Rich Mawer

Rich has been in horse racing since a small boy growing up in Yorkshire and heading to the Malton open days. At University Rich shared a house with a bookmakers son for 3 years, in that time he learned how to read form, course stats, use speed ratings and price up a card. In 1996 Rich went full-time with his betting, then with the advent of Betfair in 2002 Rich switched to the exchanges, learning to trade and lay horses.

Well it really felt like the Festival yesterday and I thought we had started with a good winner in Ginny’s Destiny who looked like the winner as they turned in, but just lost out to Grey Dawning on the run up the hill. Stage Star but in a brave show from the front in the Ryanair only to weaken on the run in and then finally we had a big each way bet on Flooring Porter in the Stayers, who again gave a great showing and went down fighting in 2nd to the favourite Teahupoo, a day without a winner but I felt all the selections did what I expected and gave their running.

On to the final day and Gold Cup Day of the Festival, three bets for me today:

1:30 Triumph Hurdle – 2m 1f

A market dominated by the Irish runners again and Majborough and Kargese both battled out a Grade 1 at Leopardstown last month, with the latter coming out on top. It is easy to see Majborough reversing that form. But I am going to take a chance on SALVATOR MUNDI, who has been off the track for nearly a year, since losing out to Sir Gino at Auteuil in April. When you think that Sir Gino was due to be a short priced favourite for this, then 10/1 is far too big a price to ignore. Clearly Willie Mullins thinks he is fit and ready to go, by sending him straight here.

SELECTION: SALVATOR MUNDI – 1pt each way at 10/1

Cheltenham Festival Overview

2:50 Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle – 3m

Another short priced Mullins horse heads the market in Readin Tommy Wrong after winning a Grade 1 Novice Hurdle at Naas in January, beating Ile Atlantique, who finished 3rd in Wednesday’s Gallagher, by a neck, with Firefox in the race too, who ran in the Supreme. So solid form to bring to this, however he is stepping up in trip significantly. I prefer to side with CAPTAIN TEAGUE who has been racing at the very top table including winning the Challow Hurdle at Newbury at the end of December before being put away for this race.

SELECTION: CAPTAIN TEAGUE – 1pt each way at 9/1

3:30 Cheltenham Gold Cup – 3m 2f

It is hard to look past Galopin Des Champs to defend his title again this year, however I think the extra test this presents could suit FASTORSLOW, so purely on the price and the fact I can;t back Galopin at 11/10, I am going to take a chance on Fastorslow to cause the upset. He is 2 from 3 meetings with Galopin.

SELECTION: FASTORSLOW – 2pts each way at 6/1

Hope you have a great last day of the festival and look forward to talking again over the three days of Aintree in a few weeks time.
