Cheltenham Tips – Day 3 – Cheltenham Festival 2023

Cheltenham Racing

Written By Rich Mawer

Rich has been in horse racing since a small boy growing up in Yorkshire and heading to the Malton open days. At University Rich shared a house with a bookmakers son for 3 years, in that time he learned how to read form, course stats, use speed ratings and price up a card. In 1996 Rich went full-time with his betting, then with the advent of Betfair in 2002 Rich switched to the exchanges, learning to trade and lay horses.

What a great Day 2 it was to the Festival yesterday, especially with Delta Work going in, and time for some more winning cheltenham tips for Day 3 and its Stayers Hurdle Day and we head to the New Course at Cheltenham for the next couple of days, a more galloping track.

1:30 Turners Novices’ Chase – 2m 4f

The best form in the race is with Mighty Potter who has gone to another level since switching to chasing, with three wins from three runs over fences but he is also inclined to throw in a few mistakes, so I am not sure I would take 11/10. My preference is for Paul Nicholl’s STAGE STAR who won over course and distance at the end of January in a decent handicap and deserves to mix it at this level. Banbridge won the Martin Pipe last year beating Cobbler’s Dream and also won the Arkle Challenge Novices Chase in November on the old course beating Tommy;s Oscar by 6 lengths but was well beaten by El Fabiolo and by Mighty Potter since then. Appreciate It won the Supreme Novices a couple of years ago and has the best hurdles form in this race but was well beaten by El Fabiolo in the Irish Arkle, finishing alongside Banbridge, so may have a bit to find on the Mighty Potter.

SELECTION: STAGE STAR – 1 pt each way at 11/1

Cue Card Winning The Ryanair Chase 2013

2:50 Ryanair Chase – 2m 4f

It is hard to get away from SHISHKIN in this race, after his impressive win at Ascot in the Betfair Chase, when he pulled away impressively to win by 16 lengths. The winner of the Supreme and Arkle, he will win this race today with little getting near him in my view and brings my first max bet of the week. Blue Lord was well beaten in last year’s Arkle by Edwardstone but then went on a run of three straight wins, before a disappointing run in the Dublin Chase when beaten by Gentleman De Mee by 7 lengths, so would be hard to trust against Shishkin. The main danger could come from Janadil who was 2nd in this race last year and despite a fall and being pulled up, went out to win a Grade 2 Chase at Gowran Park last month to show he retains plenty of ability on a going day, again hard to trust though.

SELECTION: SHISHKIN – 4pts to win at 5/6

3:30 Stayers’ Hurdle – 3m

A race that will always be the World Hurdle for me, with horses such as Big Buck’s dominating it and more recently Flooring Porter who is going for his third win in the race this year, but I have to take him on, as his recent from shows he is a little short of his best at present and there are a couple of potential staying stars on the rise against him in this race. The first is Blazing Khal who won twice here in 2021, once on the old course and once on the new course over this trip, he then took a 428 day break before returning to win at Navan last month. My selection is going to be TEAHUPOO who ran really well at the start of December at Fairyhouse in a Grade 1 hurdle to beat Klassical Dream and Honeysuckle, then built on that with an even more impressive win in the Galmoy Hurdle at Gowran Park beating Summerville Boy by 15 lengths, anywhere near that form will win this race.

SELECTION: TEAHUPOO 2pts to win at 7/2

Enjoy Day 3 and get ready for the climax of the week tomorrow with Gold Cup day. If you have time check out my Lay Systems which have given me 3 lays per day this week. I have also been using my unique approach to trading that I share in my 6 Weeks Trading Training to maximise my profit each day and leverage the volumes of money going through Betfair.

Have a great day and talk tomorrow.
