Aintree Tips – Day 1 – The Grand National Festival 2023

Aintree Chasing

Written By Rich Mawer

Rich has been in horse racing since a small boy growing up in Yorkshire and heading to the Malton open days. At University Rich shared a house with a bookmakers son for 3 years, in that time he learned how to read form, course stats, use speed ratings and price up a card. In 1996 Rich went full-time with his betting, then with the advent of Betfair in 2002 Rich switched to the exchanges, learning to trade and lay horses.

Well we are back with a cracking three days jumps racing to wind down the jumps season for 2023 before we get stuck into the flat in earnest. My aintree tips at the grand national festival are always profitable, as I focus on horses that did not quite do it at Cheltenham to bounce back here on a flatter course, at the expense of those who did achieve at the festival.

I am not going to be taking on Constitution Hill in the Aintree Hurdle and at 1/8 on he is certainly not a bet for me either, so like many of you I will sit back and admire him.

My focus is on the other three Grade 1 races of Day 1.

1:45 Manifesto Novices’ Chase – 2m 4f

An interesting opener to the day and the top three in the market hold it between them, with Banbridge skipping Cheltenham to head straight here for this race following his 2nd to El Fabiolo at Leopardstown in February, where he was beaten by a good 10 lengths, although that was after a couple of months off the track, so he may come here fitter. Saint Roi was also beaten by El Fabiolo but in the Arkle at the Festival and again by 12 lengths back in 3rd, so will have a bit to prove here. One of my big winners at Cheltenham was STAGE STAR in the Turner Novices’ Chase when he beat a decent field including Mighty Potter and this looks an easier job today.

SELECTION: STAGE STAR – 2pts to win at 7/4

Jewson Anniversary Juvenile Hurdle

2:20 4-Y-O Juvenile Hurdle – 2m 1f

An interesting race with Zenta bringing a 3rd place in the Triumph Hurdle to the table, and a run which set the standard here for this race. However there are a couple of others at better prices that i would rather side with, I really liked the run of Nusret when beating Perseus Way to win the Adonis at Kempton in February, although the run of Blood Destiny on Monday, does call into doubt his run prior to that at Fairyhouse. So I am going to side with GREYVAL who loves a galloping flat track as she showed when winning well at Doncaster and following up at Huntingdon two weeks ago, she cruises through her races and has won easily, so it is good to see her given a chance at this level and offers real value at the price.

SELECTION: GREYVAL – 1pt each way at 11/1

2:55 Aintree Bowl Chase – 3m 1f

A cracking renewal of the Aintree Bowl, only spoiled by Bravemansgame being declared a non-runner, as our Gold Cup hero could well have been a shoe in here, however my other big bet of the Festival does go and that is who I am backing in SHISHKIN who I really fancied to take the Ryanair and looked goof until making a bad mistake at three out, he recovered well though and chased Envoi Allen home, showing this step uo in trip could be perfect for him. All the reports from Seven Barrows are that he is in better shape than for Cheltenham and they expect him to make amends.

SELECTION: SHISHKIN – 4pts to win at 2/1

Enjoy Day 1 and if you have time check out my Lay Systems which have given me 3 lays per day this week. I have also been using my unique approach to trading that I share in my 6 Weeks Trading Training to maximise my profit each day and leverage the volumes of money going through Betfair.
