Well December finished on +31pts pofit for the month and took the 2011 total to +542pts profit on the back bets alone. We did not quite hit the +550pts of 2010, however I did take some weeks off last year to go on holiday and have a proper break, so I was perfectly satisfied with the result considering. The weather was kind in Decembeas it has been this week, apart from losing Ayr on Tuesday, we have been pretty lucky.

January 2012 has started well with +13 pts profit from the 1st weeks back bets, including Getting Ready winning nicely on Monday at Ayr and Emirate Isle winning at a revised 11/1 at Sedgfield on Thursday.

I am working hard on my Trading For Profits training to help those of you who are involved in or looking to get involved in trading on the betting exchanges Betfair and Betdaq – I have now registered www.tradingforprofits.co.uk and will be developing the site over the coming months to give specific tips and strategies to all you traders out there.

Over the past 8 days,we have had 16 back selections, one non-runner, so 15 actual back bets, all each way. We have had 5 winners in Moidore, Grizzle, Tour Des Champs at 9/1 ,Cubanita and Cresswell Crisader on Friday – 5 placed efforts and 5 unplaced including 1 faller in Spanish Cruise when he was going really well. The unplaced also include the 25/1 May Contain Nuts at Kempton last Thursday, giving us just over +30 pts profit on the back bets.

As I always say to you all, you have to have a long term attitude with backing. It is the nature of the game, you will have days and weeks where for whatever reason you just miss out on the big pay day but they always come. I have total confidence in what I do when making my back selections, they are well researched and I always have a very particular reason why I am making them, so I know over time I will make profit on them. This is why you must develop your other areas of laying and trading to mix in with your strategy – to take full advantage and boost your profits with other consistent profit streams. It is where the divide between “betting” and “gambling” lies. I am a realist with this and yes I love the big winners as much as anyone but I do not build my strategy around them.

I am now in the lucky position to have a subscribers list who are just like that, very dedicated to success – always asking me questions and discussing different approaches with me. I take my “mentoring” very seriously and spend 2 – 3 hours per day replying to emails and chatting to my subscribers. After replying to more email this morning I decided it was time to thank them all so I sent the following email along with today’s selection and I wanted to share it with you.

“Morning all,

Well a cracking little day on the back bets yesterday giving us around +10 pts profits. Firstly Crazy Bold at Warwick ran a good race, jumped well but did not seem to have the pace to stay with the front too, although he finished well ahead of the 4^th horse. Definitely one for the notebook over further and if his mark is unchanged. The frustrating thing was I had Timeform radio on in the background and they tipped up the 20/1 winner Dormouse, but other than a bit of course form in a victory here in February he looked like a horse who liked soft / heavy conditions but flew homw like a sprinter J Next on to my main fancy of the day, Cubanita at Nottingham,  to build on her debut when finishing 2^nd to Bonfire at Salisbury. She did just that and even though on paper it looked a large field and competetive, she was head and shoulders above most of them, Jim Crowley rode a lovely race, keeping her tucked in behind the leaders and then sending her for home a couple of furlongs out. She will improve still further of this and will be one to follow next year as a 3 yr old.

I promised everyone who was with me in October that it would settle down again, as it is always the same at the end of the flat season and start of the jumps, a little unpredictable and then settles down. I just want to thank you all, because I truly believe that now I have the best group of subscribers in the UK. I so enjoy discussing your ideas and helping you develop successful strategies, each of you has a slightly different approach which is natural but for the first time since I started doing this 2 years ago I really get the feeling that we have a group who truly understand what it takes to make this a living long term, not short term dreamers who quit after a couple of bad weeks and blame you for their failure. Unfotunately racing is full of people who want the easy answer or claim to offer the easy answer – well the answer is understanding what it takes and having the strength to see that through over years and not days or weeks. It is the one thing I don’t think you can ever teach people. Some people have it and some don’t or should I say some people are willing to change and some aren’t. A lot of people ask me why I limit my subscribers to only 30 when I could make far more money making it unlimited but my answer is simple. My money still comes from my betting – I don’t need to do this at all – the small subscription fees only just cover my time in answering emails for 2 – 3 hours per day and running the site. I do it because there is nothing better than seeing someone come through and make a real difference in their lives. I now that throwing it open to anyone would only mean I spend more time on dreamers who give it a month and then disappear – not what I want to do with my time J So that was just a thank you from me for making this a pleasure – in good times and bad.

I have got to say that there is so much information out there it is difficult to know where to begin learning. So I hope you got on – although she finished 3rd it was still a nice +5pts profit on the bet and a good start to October after a great finish to September and +52 pts profit for the month.

The changing face of backing !

Over the weekend I also decided to put together a mini series of videos on Backing and developing an effective backing strategy in the current environment.

I have put together a series of 3 videos in which I run through September 2011 and my back selections. It was a pretty typical month for us and a month which clearly demonstrated the highs and lows of backing and why it takes so much self control, discipline and patience to make a backing strategy succeed.

I share how my own betting strategy has changed over the past 8 years and how I approach my backing today, compared to when I first went full time in 2003. I hope you find my views interesting and they give you some ideas on how to develop and refine your own strategy.

2:55 Ascot – Mundana – a lightly raced 3 year old filly who is on a real upward trend, won nicely at Yarmouth in handicap company over 7f last month on good ground. A performance the yard were particularly pleased with a she is bred for faster ground. Although the ground at Ascot is officially good the weather is drying it out and it is likely to be Good to Firm and perfect. She is stepping up to 1m today but receives an age and fillies allowance totalling some 7lbs against some pretty exposed horses. Everything points to a strong run today and I am going a maximum 3pts each way at 5/2 from Bet365.

3:15 Fontwell – Fountains Flypast – another horse who I have followed for the past couple of seasons and has had some decent wins over that time, the last of which was at Taunton in March before he took the summer off the track. He returned at Newton Abbott earlier this month, but I decided to give him the run before getting involved. He ran a strong race and looked to be cruising to a victory when he made a rare mistake jumping the 2nd to last fence and unseated Rachael Green. The horse who won that day was Royale’s Charter and he has gone on to win again at my local course Market Rasen last weekend. Today looks a decent opportunity, especially as Rachael Green takes off a useful 5lbs. I am going a maximum 3 pts each way at 11/4 from Ladbrokes.

So we finished September on +52 pts profit for the month on the back bets alone – with well over 100 pts profit when you add in profits from Laying and Trading too.
